A Brief History of PPC-HK

The birth of PPC-HK, Pinoy Photographers' Club - Hong Kong is not an immaculate conception. In the night of September 2006, in an opening of a photo exhibit at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, a pinoy Hong Kong resident confessed that he had caught the highly contagious DSLR virus.

There were a number of pinoys who attended the opening of the exhibit. Some of them obviously have already caught the DSLR virus, some of them are still in denial. Intercourse took place, the sharing of thoughts and ideas, and a unanimous decision to form a support group, hence the conception of the PPC-HK.

Over pints of beer, glasses of red wine and plates of nachos at the Chinatown Pub in Wan Chai (now called Spicy Fingers), several meetings were held. After that, the group settled to meet virtually through the internet in a photosharing site called flickr. There were around 15 to 19 members at that time (now there are around 114) in the forum and we had no officers at that time. Only members who are enthusiastic about photography.

In June 2007, the first exhibit of the group was held at the Fringe Club’s fotogalerie entitled “Pagbabalik” which is a part of the 2nd Philippine Arts Festival in Hong Kong.

In September of 2007, the first set of officers were elected. Mr. Gerard Boragay, a practicing architect, a husband and father to 2 kids, a biking enthusiast and a loyal Nikon user is the first president of PPC-HK. His team are as follows: Mr. Jojo Mamamangun (vice president),  Ms. Blossom Valiente (secretary),  Mr. Butch Durias (treasurer),  John Villavicencio (PRO),  and Dave Roquel (project coordinator).

The second group exhibit of PPCHK was held in June of 2008 in two venues -- the Philippine Consulate General Office in Admiralty and the same at Fringe fotogalerie in Central. It was called “Express”.

In September of 2008, the second set of officers were elected: Mr. Gerard Boragay was re-elected as president, Mr. Michael Azucena (vice president), Ms. Blossom Valiente still the secretary, Mr. Bryan Chanco (treasurer), Mr. Bryan Ravanzo (PRO), Mr. Aldrin Victoriano and Mr. Christopher Palma (internal committee), Mr. Mikey Dungca, Mr. Ben Rosagazo, and Mr. Peter Mercado (external committee).

The symptoms of the deadly virus continue to manifest in the group through workshops like the one in Tai O, photo ops in the outlying islands and many more. The virus continues to infect middle aged men to housewives and dancers, bankers and architects, as well as public servants. The deadly virus does not spare anyone. As of now there is no known cure and PPC-HK continues to stay alive and mutating.

This year, PPC-HK is presenting its third group exhibit on June at the Philippine Consulate General Hall entitled “PARISUKAT”.
